Lady Elizabeth’s Cove Bouldering Guide

Written By: Jade on October 29, 2009 16 Comments

I love bouldering by the sea, as it combines two of my great loves, waves and rock, a feast of sensory pleasures. When I first approached Climbing and Bouldering in Waterford in The South East of Ireland I was amazed at the amount of shear sea cliff, and felt every bit ‘A Child In A Candy Store’.

After many weeks of exploration, both physical and virtual I was disappointed, as the quality of rock was poor and friable everywhere I went.

One Morning, purely by chance I stuck my head around the pier at Ladies Cove (also sometimes known as Newtown Cove). After a closer inspection of the wall I was quivering with excitement…. I had found bouldering at last! That evening armed with crash pad, shoes and chalk I set about finding problems.

I’ve climbed this area many times over the past 18 months, sometimes by myself, other times with close friends, We found no evidence of other climbers chalk marks, likewise no mention of the area on the web, so set to the task of naming and publishing.

Have had some brilliant days there, and would like to thank my climbing partners; Dany Sekyra, Katarina, Tim Sacklin, and Laura Harper for all there help and support.

This guide is very much published under the ethos of open source and adding to the community. If anybody out there as prior claim to the problems or has found new ones, I would appreciate a mail to update the guide.

Looks good, Jade. I could turn that PDF into an article for this site, if you’d like that.

    Cheers.

Hi Jade, I’m living in Waterford, I did some bouldering and rock climbing in Vietnam and though I’m not experienced I really want to continue doing it. Are you around for a chat or can you give me guidance for where to go or who to contact for training in the area. Thanks

Hi Orna, Vietnam..WOW!! Some day I’ll get to go climbing in the east…someday. Climbing resources are pretty slim around Waterford, but there are some, I’ll PM you in the morning… talk to you them. Jade

    Hi Damien,

There’s a fair bit of climbing around Waterford, from big adventure feeling trad at Coumshingaun, sports route at Ballykeefe Quarry in Kilkenny and rare pockets of bouldering. The great thing about bouldering is its simplicity, armed with a crash pad, a pair of shoes, maybe some chalk for your pinkies and your set. You ask is there any clubs around? better than that, there’s a club with a weekly indoor meet fairly close by, check out http://rathgormackclimbingclub.synthasite.com/ for more info. I also read recently about a potential co-op setting up in Waterford.. http://forum.climbing.ie/index.php?topic=2770.0 . hope that helps and gets you going…. have fun and climb smart
    cheers
    Jade

    Hi Ronnie,
To be honest I havent spent anytime climbing in Waterford in the last 18 months, but thats all changing now, was off the stone cos of injury but back at it now, had my first session in dalkey quarry this week and feeling good! gonna take a while to build the muscle strength back up. So to answer your question, nope… haven’t found anything else but haven’t looked that hard.. if you wanna hook up for a boulder over the summer then give us a shout. cheers
    Jade
